imageOrangeREADS 2014 is the second countywide reading project sponsored solely by the Orange Library Association (OLA).

In 2008 and 2010, OLA applied for and received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts to sponsor The Big Read at Orange County's 17 public libraries. In October 2008, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath was chosen as the featured book. Two years later, The Great Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe was featured

Like The Big Read, the OrangeREADS project is designed to provide the entire Orange County community an opportunity to read and discuss a single book.

Libraries will host book discussions, films, art exhibits, concerts, lectures, cooking programs, and concerts to celebrate the many themes present in Laura Hillenbrand's modern-day masterpiece.

Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken was chosen for a variety of reasons, but the book's subtitle says it all: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. Hillenbrand's biographical account of Louis Zamperini's life - before, during and after World War II - has been on The New York Times best-seller nonfiction list more than 165 times (14 of those at No.1), and counting. The movie, based on the book and directed by Angelina Jolie, will be released on Christmas Day.

We hope you will join us in celebrating Laura Hillenbrand's unforgettable tale about Louis, World War II and the resilience of the human spirit.
